and  custom instruments

Welcome to Garehan Guitars. While guitars are the main focus of my craft, please keep an open mind and know that what I am able to build is limited only by your imagination. Whether it be a traditional acoustic guitar, electric guitar with bizarre electronics or an unusual harp guitar, it can be created just as you see and hear it in your mind. All instruments that leave my shop are the product of my hands alone. Every instrument is given my full attention as I craft it to your specifications. Building each instrument by hand gives me the ability to fine tune every element of the design (be it tonal, ergonomic, or aesthetic) to better suit you and what you're looking for in an instrument.

As a guitar builder, I have the distinct advantage of looking at every instrument I design and build from the point of view of an engineer, a musician, and an artist. As a mechanical engineering student, I'm concerned with an instrument's ability to work efficiently and stand the test of time. In the spirit of Albert Einstein, I consider a design elegant when it is "...as simple as possible, but no simpler."  As a musician, I'm concerned with an instrument's ability to sound as I desire it to, to perform consistently, to feel comfortable even during extended gigs and recording sessions, and to take the abuse that instruments see during regular gigging. Finally, as an artist, it's important to me that any instrument I build is able to speak a message or concept that transcends the spoken word; I prefer to bend what is acceptable as "art" while still creating something that will be considered classically beautiful even a hundred years from now.

Each instrument begins with a design. You may base your instrument's design on anything shown in my photo gallery, or we can start from scratch and create something truly unique and original. During the design phase, the materials that will be used in your instrument are chosen. While tone wood is at the core of every instrument I build, I often integrate composites, such as carbon fiber or Kevlar, into my design to provide added strength and stiffness with little added weight. The materials for every instrument I build, be them electric or acoustic, are given consideration as to how their characteristics will impact the sound of the finished product.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Remember: the possibilities for your next instrument are endless.

regards,
Russell Garehan
